green-globeGreen Cooling

Data centers account for about 2% of the planet’s entire electricity consumption. This is only going to increase further with continuously growing demand for calculation-intensive cloud-computing services. Unfortunately, roughly 50% of that energy is wasted for cooling. It is this wasted energy, not used for anything productive, which results in a serious contribution to greenhouse gases like CO².

Captures Heat at the Source

Without wasting any energy, passive 2-phase immersion cooling is the most efficient and elegant way to capture heat right at the source. Electronic components are submerged into a bath of dielectric heat transfer liquids, such as 3M Novec Engineered Fluids, which are much better heat conductors than air or water. With their low boiling point (ie. 49°C vs. 100°C in water), they boil on the surface of the heat generating devices and rising vapor will passively transfer heat away.

It is this simplicity that eliminates conventional cooling hardware (thousands of fans and heatsinks, air conditioners, raised floors for air flow, etc) and results in better cooling with much less effort.

Zero Ozone Depletion Potential

Novec fluid does not deplete ozone (zero ozone depletion potential) and has a low global warming potential. It is low toxic and non-flammable. Because of its low global warming potential, Novec is used in fire extinguishing systems by companies such as IBM or the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The use of Novec means a 99% reduction in greenhouse gases compared to Halon based systems.

Immersion cooling also benefits from 'free cooling' at ambient temperatures, even in hot and humid climates. Heat generated by an immersion cooled system can be easily recaptured and reused for heating.
